The Pundit Panel (Week 17 Game 2): Legion @ Memphis 901

Yes, at some point we have to go to Memphis

John, Jacob and Jingleheimer (Kaylor) all correctly predicted the win, but Schmidt (Simon) erroneously expected a draw. However, no one got the scoreline or the margin of victory right, so just one point each. Next up, and closing out this rough stretch of games is Area Code FC. Here are the panel’s thoughts:

Prediction
Win 3-1

Win 2-1

Win 2-1

Draw 1-1
Memphis 901 has become yet another utterly unpredictable squad. In the  five games since beating the Legion, they beat Tulsa and SKC 2, drew with Indy and Colorado Springs, and lost to OKC Energy.

On a PPG basis, they are 4th in the division, too. Not an easy out any more.

The big issue is shutting down Kyle Murphy, who has scored 8 goals in his last 8 games. He may sneak one in, but the Legion attack is firing on all cylinders finally. The Three Sparks take all 3 points on the road.

Memphis 901 FC are fast. Their matches are scattered with red cards, both for them and their opposition. Their particular style of play should mesh well with what the Legion are all about. Birmingham Legion control the space in the midfield and keep up the firepower for this one. Birmingham Legion 2 – 1 Memphis 901 FC.
What’s the best way to stop one of the hottest strikers and current USL Player of the Month? With a stout defense. With a slightly rotated side, the 3 Sparks gave up 2 goals but the offense looked like they were absolutely buzzing in the second half.
Something we haven’t seen in matches vs. Area Code FC is an absolute shootout between the two teams but this time it very well could be if both groups are clicking.
That said, it’s hard to see that happening considering certain time wasting tactics and the nature of rivalry matches. 2-1 Legion away from home.
Memphis are doing what they did last season and getting better. I want revenge for their dubious victory at BBVA last time we played them but I think that the sides will share the points.
