Legion signs Amadou Diop

The Birmingham Legion today announced the first new signing of the offseason. The team has added forward Amadou “Macky” Diop (pronounced “Jop”). Diop was previously with Atlanta United 2 but was released at the end of the 2021 season (as was also, as it happens, his brother Abdoulaye). As a former Twonited player he is obviously well acquainted with the Three Sparks already.

Macky played two season in Atlanta, scoring 9 goals over 32 appearances. Prior to that he has experience with USL League 2 team New Yor Red Bulls U23 and Radford University, as well as a brief stint in Croatia with Dinamo Zagreb II. At Radford he scored 13 goals in 16 games. For those who don’t know, Radford is a D-1 school in the Big South Conference.

Born in Dakar, Senegal, he is 26 years old and 6’3″. Physically, then, he is very similar to JJ Williams, which may explain the Legion having declined JJ’s option. The team still needs to complete its attacking lineup, especially since Neco Brett remains out of contract.

Welcome to the Ham, Macky!
