After a strong first half, Birmingham City gave up two second half goals, including a set piece score in stoppage time to end the game against the visitors from Wales all square at 2-2.

The scoring started with a Troy Deeney shot from just beyond the penalty spot in the 29th minute, increasing his Blues total to 4. The Blues lead was doubled by Ivan Sunjic in first half stoppage time. Both goals were assisted by Riley McGree. McGree has established himself as perhaps the Blues’ best player since star loanee Tahith Chong suffered a freak groin injury a month ago that will keep him sidelined for 4 months. The trouble with that is, the Australian McGree will also be gone in the New Year as he is himself on loan from Charlotte FC of MLS, who play their inaugural season in 2022.

The Birmingham lead held up for 45 minutes of the second half, although it was reduced to one goal in the 66th minute by Kieffer Moore. The heartbreak finish was a header by Mark McGuinness off a corner just into stoppage time.

Once again, the Blues were outshot and outpossessed by the opposition, despite playing at home against a team that was just one spot above the relegation zone. With the draw, Cardiff moves up one place to 20th, and Birmingham remains in 15th.
