Game Report (and Preview): Birmingham Legion WFC 3-2 Southern Soccer AcademyA familiar scoreline
While the men’s team continued to rest, Legion WFC moved on with its season, playing Southern Soccer Academy for the second time at Spain Park High School last Saturday. Having already beaten SSA 2-0 in Marietta, the Legion ladies found themselves with a much tougher battle on their hands this time.
The always reliable Ashlyn Serepca opened the scoring in first half stoppage time, but what looked to be a dominant Legion performance got interesting just 6 minutes into the second half with an SSA equalizer. The two teams then proceeded to play evenly for most of the second half until WFC’s Isabel Smith finally found a breakthrough in the 85th minute. But that lead was short-lived as SSA equalized again just a regulation time expired. In true Legion fashion, though, the home team kept the attack going and found the winning goal 2 minutes in second half stoppage time via a long-range shot by substitute Morgan White.
That was the second time this season Legion WFC has won a game in stoppage time, and the 3rd time the club overall has won a game late by a 3-2 score. It’s getting to be a habit.
The win solidifies the team’s 2nd place position in the South Central Division, as SSA were breathing down their necks.
The ladies aren’t getting much of a break, however. Tonight they head to Columbia, South Carolina to face the SC United Bantams (6:00pm). That will be 3 games in 6 days. Rough. The Bantams are currently 6th of 7 in the division, but that’s a bit misleading. They are behind Tennessee SC only on tiebreakers and have a 1-2-2 record. That doesn’t sound good, but that 1 win was 1-0 against the Chattanooga Red Wolves. They could be dangerous. The game will be streamed live here.
After that Legion WFC has a 4-game home stand before finishing the season at North Alabama SC.
